ABOUT DR. M.V. SHETTY MEMORIAL TRUST (R)

Dr. M.V. Shetty MS, FICS, FRFPS

The Dr.M.V. Shetty Memorial Trust was founded in 1985 by Dr M. Ram Gopal Shetty, the founder took inspiration from his father Dr. M Venugopal Shetty.

Late Dr. M.V. Shetty, MS, FRCS, FRFPS was eminent in several fields ; in his professional field of surgery, in rehabilitation and in the state – run institution of Home Guards. As a surgeon with the 1st private Surgical Specialty Hospital in Dakshina Kannada District, he was also distinguished Professor of Surgery at KMC, Honorary Medical Officer at Government Wenlock Hospital, Director of the Lions Limb Centre and Commandant of the D.K. Home Guards. His dedication earned him the respect of patients, colleagues, fellow doctors, students and the general public. He had the courage of his strong convictions and a humane code of practice to match. At the personal level he was known to have a keen appreciation of music, he played the tabla and young people, his students especially, always responded to his humorous and understanding way of dealing with them.

The Trust established in his name has many firsts to its credit; the first nursing college in the private sector in the state began at BSc. Level progressing to MSc. in 1987; Physiotherapy (first in Karnataka) at BPT level in 1991 progressing to MPT and Ph.D. level; Speech and Hearing at BASLP level in 1991 progressing to MASLP and Ph.D., Medical Laboratory Technology at the degree level in 1996; M.Sc. MLT in 2009. Other courses conducted by the trust are the Diploma in General Nursing from 1993 and a postgraduate program in Social Work(MSW) in 1999, B.A. in fine arts in 2007, a postgraduate Diploma in Classical Dance in 2010, a B.Ed Programme ,Diploma in medical technology in 2019 and B.Sc. MIT in 2023.

The practice of health care and technological education is changing rapidly and the Trust will remain alert to these changes in the spirit of the tradition shaped by Dr. M.V. Shetty – our inspiration

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Dr. M.Ramgopal Shetty MS, FICS, FICA

Dr. M. Ram Gopal Shetty, established Dr.M.V. Shetty Memorial Trust in 1985 inspired by his father, Dr. M. Venugopal Shetty.

Late Dr. M. Ramgopal Shetty, who served as the Secretary and Executive Officer of The Dr. M. V. Shetty Memorial Trust, made significant contributions to the field of paramedical education and healthcare services in Karnataka. Having played a pivotal role in academic bodies such as Mangalore University and Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Dr. M.R. Shetty’s dedication was evident through his involvement in the Academic Council and Syndicate of Mangalore University, as well as the Syndicate of RGUHS.

Under Dr. M.R Shetty’s visionary leadership, The Trust introduced numerous vocational courses in Nursing, Physiotherapy, Speech and Hearing, Medical Laboratory Technology, Social Work, and Education. As an executive member of the Rehabilitation Council of India, he furthered his commitment to the development of allied medical education. Currently, the Trust manages 19 diverse graduate, postgraduate, and diploma courses across nine affiliated colleges with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, and Mangalore University, Mangaluru.

Dr. M.R. Shetty’s educational journey began at St. Aloysius High School, Mangalore, and continued at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, where he completed his graduate and postgraduate professional education. His pursuit of excellence led him to the UK for a vascular surgery fellowship. Upon his return, he served as Assistant Professor in Surgery at KMC until 1989. The legacy of his surgical specialty unit, Peripheral Vascular Surgery, endures at Government Wenlock Hospital, providing specialized care to the underprivileged.

In alignment with Dr. M.R. Shetty’s vision, inspired by his father’s community-centric work, the Trust manages essential facilities such as the Blood Bank at Government Wenlock Hospital, a clinical facility for Physiotherapy, and a Medical Laboratory at Government Lady Goschen Hospital. These facilities operate round the clock, offering free services to those in need. Dr. MV Shetty Hospital continues this commitment by providing free clinical facilities for Physiotherapy and Speech and Hearing.

Dr. M.R. Shetty’s profound contribution, even after his passing, has left an enduring impact on the paramedical landscape in Karnataka and beyond. His vision, focused on providing quality health services, professional training, and affordable diagnostic and therapeutic facilities, remains a guiding force for the Trust’s continued dedication to the well-being of the community.
